After open heart surgery, Bernhard Coffindaffer, a West Virginia businessman, took the 2.5 million dollars from the sale of his coal cleaning plant and began to erect this group of crosses across the country. He built more than 1800 across 29 states. He died penniless. He had given away everything he had gained to honor the cross of Jesus Christ.
